âAh, I wasnât done having fun.â Lorenzo pushes his bloodied fingers through his hair and smiles at the mess that was the Geak piece of shit.
Chiara is doubled over, her hands pressed against her knees as she struggles to control her breathing.
I glance at the other three, who have drawn together opposite Chiara and me. Them and us. I put my hand on Chiaraâs back. âSay thank you to my former friends. Itâs because of them youâre untouched.â
Chiara slowly pulls herself upright. Sheâs deathly pale and her eyes are hollow, but she suddenly looks furious. âUntouched? Untouched? Are you kidding me?â
âWhat are you talking about? What did that piece of shit do to you?â
âIâm talking about the night of my birthday and what your friends did then.â
Lorenzo laughs. âQuit whining. Itâs not like you had anything shoved between your legs, princess.â
Chiara glares at Lorenzo, who smirks back.
âFuck you,â she whispers at the blond man. âYou never told him, did you?â
I stride forward and grab Lorenzo by the collar. âTold me what? What did you do to her?â
Lorenzo snatches his knife from inside his jacket and holds the pointy end against my ribs, growling, âBack off, pretty boy.â
I let go of him slowly, teeth grit, and turn to my future bride. âWhatâs he talking about?â
She nods at Vinicius. âHe wasnât too bad. He just kissed me and slid his hand up my leg. He was worse,â she adds, turning to Cassius. âHe pulled my dress up and spanked me. But him.â Chiara gazes at Lorenzo with an expression full of loathing. âHe tied my hands behind my back, pushed me against a wall and said disgusting things to me. Then he ripped my underwear off and shoved the hilt of his knife between my legs like he was going toâ¦you know what.â
I go back to Chiara and put my hand on her shoulder, but she angrily shrugs me off.
âAnd you were just as bad! You choked me with your bare hands because I dared to talk back to you. Iâm grateful I didnât get raped with broken bottles and killed because my father put some gangsters in prison, but expressing gratitude to these three assholes sticks in my throat. And you know what? So does saying thank you to you, Salvatore.â
Silence falls across the lot. Thereâs a pinch of regret in Cassiusâ face, but Lorenzo just looks bored and Vinicius is preoccupied with his hair.
âIâm sorry,â I finally mutter.
Chiara looks up. âSorry for what, exactly?â
Not for what we did. Iâm sorry that I never explained why. âOn your birthday, we did what we had to do. We walk into every unknown situation and establish ourselves fast as the most dangerous men in the room. That way no one challenges us. This is how we stay successful. This is how we stay alive.â
âBut I wasnât going to hurt you! I was just trying to celebrate my birthday. The four of you knew you were coming to meet a seventeen-year-old girl. There was no reason for you all to scare the living daylights out of me.
